Beginnings
7th Silence started back in '96, but the guys go back even further. Jay met Michael in '94 and they played in a few bands before going their separate ways for a while. Jay and Brad used to play baseball together when they were just kids. 7th Silence had it's beginning when Jay and Brad (who was playing drums at the time and was just learning bass) left the band they were in during this period to pursue something heavier. A couple of days later, Jay was hanging with Michael's brother Andrew when he began talking with Michael and found out that his old band had just broken up and that Michael was looking for a group with a harder edge. Jay jumped to the phone to call Brad and set up the first 7th Silence practice in Jay's living room that weekend. The practice went fantastic and the boys soon learned that not only could they play well together, but that the way they feed off of each other and wrote songs was something most bands dream of. The chemistry was explosive. This explosion factor not only showed up in the songs, but also in the live show as well and this was proven six months later when 7th Silence (known then as Spring Loaded Sprocket) played their first live show ever and took 2nd place at Holy Cross Secondary School's '97 Battle of the Bands.
Somewhere in the Middle
"It's emotional." says Jay when asked about his band. "The songs aren't just a bunch of shit thrown together, it's like a puzzle. Every part is there because it was meant to be there, because it fits." This is the song writing process that 7th Silence goes through. Songs are not simply put together, but more felt together. As Jay puts it, "It's like, I'll start out with a riff and then Brad will put something to it, or Brad will start out with a riff and I'll put something to it. Then Michael will lay down this cool beat...and then the song just happens. Stuff just flows out and before we know it, we've got a brand new song." Brad says, "It's good the way we write. Everyone contributes equally." "We spice it up with a bit of rhythm." adds Michael. Jay also describes the lyrical process as somewhat the same. "I'll start with one idea or line, and it just writes itself." But no matter what the process 7th Silence uses, it works! The songs are powerful and they hit you in the gut. They are meaningful, emotional and true and it's the songs that have got the band to where they are now. 7th Silence has played with such great acts as Jon the Mac, Malice, Sector Seven, Meat the Cleavers and Scratching Post. They shocked the fans with an explosive debut cassette and are now riding on the wave of their new and equally, if not more, explosive CD, In Perfect Chaos to back up what they gotta say. But even then, you still do not know 7th Silence until you have seen them live. "That's where we really shine." says Jay. Emotion? Feeling? The show gives it all. So in essence, you ain't seen nothing until you've seen 7th Silence. "It's a fresh, new sound that not many bands have." concludes Brad.
What's next?
So, what's next? "Hey, whatever happens." is Jay's response. "That's good enough for us."
